Paris already starts clearing migrant camps eight months before Olympic games

French authorities in Paris have cleared out a migrant camp in what homeless charities say is an attempt to clear the capital ahead of the next summer.

The makeshift migrant camp in the Stalingrad district was dismantled by riot police in an early morning operation.

More than 200 migrants informally living at the camp were transferred to reception centres in different regions of France.

Paris authorities have defended the actions arguing: “People taken in are provided with an evaluation of their administrative situation, as well as social and health support, with their consent.”

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron is losing the confidence of French voters to maintain law and order, according to a new poll.

The polling from October came against a backdrop of rising violent crime and terror threats in France.

The Fiducial Odoxa online poll for Le Figaro showed that nearly 73 per cent of French people reported losing confidence in the French Government’s ability to maintain security in the country.

The results have sparked a renewed focus on security in the country ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics next summer.

France was rocked by nationwide riots earlier this year after a teenager of north African descent was shot by police.

Meanwhile, in October, 57-year-old teacher Dominique Bernard was killed in a knife attack by a suspected Islamist.

The terror threat level in France remains high as a result of the war between Israel and Hamas terrorists.
