Moment huge tower block collapses in Gaza after retaliatory strikes by Israel

Video shows the moment a huge tower block in the middle of Gaza City collapsed following a retaliatory strike by Israel.

Multiple rockets are seen hitting the 11-storey Palestine Tower before it crumbles, causing an enormous cloud of black smoke.

The high-rise is home to Hamas radio stations and includes a cinema.

More than 100 Israelis have been killed so far in the deadly attacks, with almost 1,000 wounded, the health ministry has said.

The militant Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip have fired thousands of rockets while breaching the heavily fortified border in several locations.

The militant group caught the country off-guard on a major Jewish holiday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Israel was “at war” and called for a mass mobilization of army reserves.

It revived painful memories of the 1973 Mideast war practically 50 years to the day, in which Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, aiming to take back Israeli-occupied territories.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the Hamas attacks “in the strongest terms”, urging maximum restraint and stressed that violence cannot solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In an assault of startling breadth, Hamas gunmen rolled into as many as 22 locations outside the Gaza Strip, including towns and other communities as far as 15 miles from the Gaza border.

In some places, they roamed for hours, gunning down civilians and soldiers until Israel’s military mustered a response. Even well after nightfall, gunbattles continued in some locations.

At least 100 people have been killed so far and hundreds wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years, Israel’s national rescue service said.
